Generally, when we talk about "the index", we mean the PSE Composite Index.  However, there are many other indeces which form each sector.  This page seeks to clarify which shares belong to which index, as some are not as obvious as their names may suggest.

Credit for the content of this page belongs to my good man Mr. Javier Barredo, who verified this with the PSE last March, 1998.   Our index compositions have not changed since then, but some shares have changed names.  Click here for a print-friendly  XLS version.

*Note: as of September 17, 2001, the Index Composition has been changed. The following disclosure below:

The Philippine Stock Exchange has approved the new composition of the PSE Index which will take effect by Monday. The new stocks to be included in the 30-company main index are Bank of the Philippine Islands (BPI), Union Cement Corporation (UCC), Music Corporation (MUSX), Globe Telecom, Inc. (GLO) and First Philippine Holdings Corp. (FPH).

The new stocks will replace Filinvest Development Corp. (FDC), C&P Homes, Inc. (CMP), Fil-Estate Land Inc. (LND), Pilipino Telephone Corp. (PLTL) and Southeast Asian Cement Holdings, Inc. (CMT). The PSE said that the new basket of stocks is the result of a review of all listed companies for 1998-2000 using existing guidelines governing the selection of index stocks

A PSE source said the new index is a better representation of the market. The last time the composite was changed was in 1998.

The new basket of stocks is the result of the review and evaluation of all listed companies by the PSE research department. Guidelines used in the review include market capitalization and liquidity of stocks, maturity, representation by each industry, and stock type.

The source said that based on last year's market figures, the new index captures 74% of the total market capitalization compared to 69% of the previous index.

A brief explanation:

warrants are not part of the 30 share composite index.

assuming BEL is currently at 1.20.  When you buy one share of BELW, you are entitled to buy one share of BEL at 8.50 if you want to avail of this right.  That means you will be paying 8.50 + (price of BELW, say, .18) = 8.18  for a share of BEL to avail of this warrant! Crazy huh?  When their expiry date comes, these warrants would expire worthless.  That means if you haven't sold them by that time, you will be holding on to worthless paper.  Warrant prices could no longer be adjusted, but their expiry dates may be petitioned by the company to be extended.
